Trust Fund News -- April and May 2008

Trust Fund by-laws were revised at the annual meeting in January. The old by-laws allowed for support of new ministries, but there was no provision for funding the many worthy on-going ministries that regularly make requests. With the by-law revision, that has now changed.

At their March meeting the board designated $2500 as seed money for the new “On-going Ministries Fund.”  This is not a perpetual fund: both gifts and earnings will be spent. We hope the fund will grow with further gifts from the membership. We encourage you to keep On-Going Ministries in mind when making gifts and memorials.

Once the “On-going Ministries Fund” was created, it raised another issue: prioritization.  At a recent meeting the board reviewed many requests from the last couple of years. They included campus and radio ministries; synod and seminary appeals; all sorts of benevolences, from the Marie Sandvig Center to World Hunger; and outreach/evangelism programs like the Gideons, Prisoners of Hope, and the Parish Nurse program.

This is not a choice between good and bad causes.  Rather, it is a choice among different types of good.  We would also like to support causes that the congregation is willing to support themselves.  To that end, matching funds may be available for any gift to the On-Going Ministries Fund which has a specific designation.

During the April Trust Fund board meeting, Nathan and Nicole Norby pledged to give $100 to the Ongoing Ministries Fund. The board voted to match it, when the funds are received, and send a $200 check to Gideons International. Likewise, Al and Joyce Leedahl pledged to give $120 to the Ongoing Ministries Fund. The board voted to match it, when the funds are received, and send a $240 check to the Lutheran Campus Ministry of Minnesota.

During the last month several organizations sent requests for funds by letter to the Trust Fund. Of these, the board has indicated they would consider matching funds given to the Ongoing Ministries Fund for the purpose of supporting one or more of the following:

The Salvation Army
Sing for Joy (St. Olaf College radio program)
Marie Sandvik Center
Prairie Five Food Shelf
